Pruning should be done after the main fruiting period in late winter to early spring so the wounds can heal before the beetles fly.
Borer gets in through wounds when the adults lay their eggs during the flying season (around November to March) and the larvae do all the damage. They tunnel their way inside the branches towards the stem preventing sap from flowing.
If you find evidence of borer, remove the limb immediately, if possible right to the parent stem, treat the holes, and monitor the tree. A heavy infestation can kill the tree.

Some of the trees to admire stunning bark include the twisting lines of mature Sweet Chestnut, the white peeling bark of the Betula papyrifera, and the smooth and peeling bark of the Watergum Tristaniopsis laurina.
Get amongst them at Cornwall Park, the Domain, Botanical Gardens, or even the Hamilton Gardens. They all provide you with fabulous opportunities to enjoy the bare trees and the awesomeness of their bark.

Trimming some internal branches will also help the pollinating birds access all the flowers.

On Queen's birthday, we received a call from a very distressed elderly client who had been approached by door knockers insisting on doing some tree work for her.
She knew it didn’t seem right so-called us to check. She was frightened as they didn’t seem to want to leave. 😡
Mike was in the area and went around immediately to make sure they left and check that she was ok.
No reputable company will ever knock on doors and insist on doing work that has not been requested. They did this because she was vulnerable and they took advantage of her.
If it was you and your mates going around with a trailer and a chainsaw intimidating people …shame, shame, shame, on you!!!

🤨🥱When this 500 yr. old Puriri dropped a large limb on a house, the owner was lucky treasured items were not damaged.
While we cleaned up and removed the limb, a Morepork sat and watched us work. When we finished, she squeezed into a crack in the tree back to her nest and back to bed!

We installed this tree guard, which is effectively a roadblock, preventing the possums from progressing up the tree, stopping them in their tracks.
The clear plastic possum guard is inconspicuous and hard-wearing. Unlike steel guards, these do not heat up in the sun -potentially damaging the trunk, and do not attach to the tree. They will also foil rats trying to climb up your tree trunk.
We can install these efficiently and cost-effectively. Learn more here www.thetreeman.co.nz...

Your young tree needs constant access to good food and water to grow strong and healthy. Deep watering will encourage the roots to grow deep, safeguarding the tree through droughts and creating stability and anchorage.
Early pruning means energy is not wasted on limbs that will need to be removed later and potential weak points are minimized.
Care in those developmental years will pay off hugely as the tree matures.

The deadwood is very brittle and can easily snap when limbs move in the wind.
Most of the debris on the road and driveways after a storm will be deadwood. Be proactive and go through your trees to remove deadwood before it's torn off and hits your car or house.
