As Kaitiaki, We uphold the Mana Whenua, Mana Moana, for Ki Uta ki Tai.

WHAKATAKI 10B1 MARAE RESERVATION

Matira-refers to Castlerock, to tilt upwards built in 1905 approximately.

The eight original owners of the Marae Block are listed as:
Ihaia Whakamaiuru, Matenga Potangaroa, Haami Potangaroa, Kingi Potangaroa, Ihipera Patuwai (Old Lady Paku), Wirihana Te Oi Oi, Mihi Keita Te Oi Oi and Waata Paraone.

This is the base for Te Hika a Papauma ki Wairarapa. In the past families from inland would reside at the Marae whilst collecting kaimoana before returning to their homes inland.

The Tupuna of the land in Whakataki is Whareaute, and all Maori who have land interest in the Marae are descended from him.

After a fire which destroyed the Wharenui, the Tekoteko, Whareaute, which survived, was placed in the Whakataki Hotel, until a new Marae is built.

Whanau/Hapu Names: Ngati Hinepare, Ngati Kakawa, Te Rautangata.
