A good life coach will help you make the most of your life, and prosper through life’s challenges. For example; building healthy relationships, career goals, change and loss, managing stress and work-life balance. Helping you clear away the clouds to let the sunshine in.

But how to find your ideal coach?

To get positive results you need to feel you are comfortable sharing your innermost feelings and desires. Your coach really needs to ‘get’ you so that so they can effectively support and motivate you in the journey towards the goals you choose.

Fortunately, most life coaches give you the chance to ‘try before you buy’ and offer an introductory free session. Check through local life coaches on the net and check out a couple with a free session to find one you feel most comfortable with.

Costs for ongoing sessions can vary quite widely but some coaches offer a discounted rate if you are on a limited income. It’s good to check.

Ever feel like you're on a good path but could use a little help reaching your full potential? Or maybe you're facing challenges that feel overwhelming. This guide can help you decide between life coaching and counselling.

Life Coaching:
• Focus on the Future: Life coaches act as your cheerleader and brainstorming buddy, helping you set and achieve goals you're excited about. They focus on the present and what you can do to move forward.

• Action-Oriented: Life coaching is a collaborative process. You'll work together to develop strategies and overcome obstacles to reach your goals, whether it's improving your career, relationships, or overall well-being.
• Shorter Term: Life coaching is typically shorter-term than therapy, often lasting a few months to a year. It's ideal for those who are generally functioning well but want to take things to the next level.

Counselling:
• Addressing Deeper Issues: Counselors or therapists are trained mental health professionals who can help you understand and overcome challenges stemming from past experiences, negative emotions, or mental health conditions.
• Longer-Term Support: Therapy can be a longer-term commitment, depending on your needs. It delves deeper into your past to identify root causes of current issues and develop coping mechanisms.
• Wider Range of Concerns: Counselors can address a wider range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, and addiction.

The bottom line:
• Life coaching is ideal if you're looking for a supportive partner to help you achieve specific goals and navigate life transitions.
• Counselling is the better choice if you're struggling with deeper emotional issues or mental health concerns.

• Caring for yourself - make homemade soup to eat at work.
• Take a two-minute cold shower each morning to dispel the blues.
• Set your alarm 30 minutes early to give yourself time for a quiet cuppa.
• Do a 10-minute tidy-up with your partner each day rather than letting the household chores pile up.
• If life’s too stimulating ‘reset your brain’ by putting your head under the bedcovers for 15 minutes to shut out the world.
• Brush your teeth standing on one foot and alternate the foot each night. Great to develop better balance!
• Unsubscribe from retailers' email lists you follow but don’t usually read.
• Start each day by acknowledging three things (big or small) you’re thankful for.
• Have one day a week set aside as ‘social media free’.

Life Coaching and Mindfulness - A trendy fad?

For example, to change habits they have or the way they usually tend to respond in particular situations. These changes are often hard to make because most of us operate on ‘autopilot’ or ‘muscle memory’. We respond without conscious thinking, to situations as they come up. We have habitual responses that are often quite deeply ingrained.

Henry Ford, the founder of Ford Motor Company famously said that if we always do what we’ve always done, we’ll always get what we’ve always got. To change we must turn off the autopilot and respond consciously or ‘mindfully’ to each particular situation rather than just ‘doing what we have always done’.

To ‘turn off the autopilot’ we must be able to recognise or notice the point where we would usually react automatically, so we can consciously modify our response in a way that will better move us towards our chosen goals. Mindfulness helps us ‘notice the gap’ that very brief interval just before making a habitual response where we can consciously choose a more positive response.

Following extensive research, mindfulness training has now been widely adopted in both coaching and counselling because it helps us be more aware of our thoughts and feelings, and therefore recognise when opportunities to make conscious change arise.
In a simple form of mindfulness, our coaching client sits quietly, often focusing on their breathing. They practice daily or weekly simply noticing their thoughts and feelings, not engaging with them or judging them.
If you would like to develop more mindfulness, here is a simple practice to start.
• Find a quiet space and sit comfortably.
• Close your eyes or soften your gaze.
• Focus on your breath, feeling the rise and fall of your chest or abdomen.
• When your mind wanders gently notice your thought and guide your attention back to your breath.
• Practice for just a few minutes each day, gradually increasing the duration as you become more comfortable.

An introductory free life coaching session gives you a chance to experience coaching, clarify the goals you want to achieve, and get a real taste of the coaching process.
Research shows that in life coaching the relationship between the coach and the client is the most important success factor so it’s very important to find a coach with whom you are comfortable enough to fully share your thoughts, feelings, and goals.

Your coach really needs to ‘get’ you, to be able to effectively support and motivate you in the journey towards the goals you choose.
