Buried Village of Te Wairoa

For over 85 years the Buried Village of Te Wairoa has preserved and shared the history of the village buried when Mount Tarawera erupted in 1886.

Now a world class museum, the excavated site of the once tourist town of Te Wairoa and a spectacular waterfall trail offer visitors an emotive glimpse into this piece of new Zealand history. The story of the Pink and White Terraces is also highlighted by images and accounts in our museum.

Most New Zealanders have visited us, either when they were children, parents or grandparents, or all three. It would be great to see you again.

For Rotorua residents the entry is half price and you will be given the option to pick up a Heritage Card. This gives you free entry for a year and discount in the retail store, Teahouse and for any visitors you bring with you.

We're 15 minutes from town, just past the Blue and Green Lakes. Lake Tarawera and views of the mountain are just down the road.

Come for an hour or stay half a day.
