WE are a community, non political, non profit organisation. We were formed in 2010 out of concern for the survival of the Wild Salmon Run in the Waitaki River. If nothing is done for the salmon they will become extinct in the very near future. We raise salmon smelt from our own brood stock and release there fish into the river system, where the fish travel out to sea, for a further two years. A very small percentage of these will return . The intention of our returning fish is to take the fishing pressure from the returning wild stock. We have been developing two sites and we are now in a position to raise 50,000 smolt for release. These sites are situated at Bells Pond, off Ross Road, Waimate; and situated on Welcome Stream, on McPhersons Rd , North Otago. If we get 1% back that will effectively double the wild return. We need volunteers to help out with the fish management. This consists of cleaning the raceways and checking that the fish have sufficient fish food in the automatic feeders. This is not hard work as all the hard work has been done. Our main requirement for volunteers is when we Fin clip the fish that we are going to release. This is a labour intensive job but if sufficient people help out the process can be completed in two and a half hours. This is a fun time and a BBQ and refreshments are provided on completion of the work.
