Step Forward is part of the national publicly-funded, Like Minds, Like Mine programme aimed at increasing social inclusion and reducing the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness.
Step Forward is a social change campaign that aims to end mental illness discrimination. The goal is to raise awareness of the needs and reasons to socially include people with experience of mental illness and distress.
You may have already seen or heard something about the Step Forward campaign on TV, in the news, on the radio or online. We want New Zealanders to look out for ways to show their support and step forward to end mental illness discrimination. Visit our campaign website for more information.
Discrimination is not just about individuals. It also exists in workplaces and community settings in New Zealand. Within the Like Minds, Like Mine programme there are many activities happening in addition to the promotional campaign. There are 16 community programmes occurring around the country. A key component of these programmes is the leadership by people with lived experience of mental illness and distress alongside education activities to challenge the myths and stereotypes. If people are concerned about their own or someone’s mental health we recommend they seek help. They may talk to their GP, a school counsellor, ring a local mental health service or check out the Like Minds, Like Mine website. If it’s an emergency phone 111.
