Hamilton Operatic Society (HOS) is one of the oldest non-profit musical theatre groups in New Zealand, celebrating its 115th year in 2019. The Society stages high-quality musical productions on a regular basis, utilising many of Hamilton's well-known theatres. HOS operate an extensive Wardrobe and Cloth Hire department, located upstairs at Clarence Street Theatre. Past productions include Les Miserables, Evita, Oliver, Cats, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Hairspray, The Phantom of the Opera, and the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Numerous compilation and theatre restaurant shows have been commissioned for the Society, involving many prominent Hamilton personalities. Past cast members are now household names, and include Dame Malvina Major, the late Rob Guest, Suzanne Lee, & Max Cryer. The Society has provided a training ground and an introduction to theatre for many community members who have subsequently made a career onstage or otherwise in the theatre industry.
