Built as a family homestead in 1882, Avebury House and the surrounding 8 acres were sold to the Crown in 1945. In 1951 ownership was deeded to the Mayor, Councillors and citizens of Christchurch for recreational purposes. The House and the surrounding .8275 ha were used as a community house, with Plunket rooms, children’s play area and park. By the 1960s the two-storied Victorian house was saved from demolition by the Youth Hostel Assn which ran it as the Cora Wilding Youth Hostel until 1997. In 1999 the Christchurch City Council decided to restore and adapt Avebury House for use by the community. This was done after extensive consultation and Avebury House Community Trust was formed in December 2001. On the 18th September 2002, Prime Minister Helen Clark re-opened Avebury House for the community’s use. Avebury House is nestled in Eveleyn Couzins Avenue amidst the beautiful Avebury Park and playground. If desired the park can be hired from the Christchurch City Council for your exclusive use when hiring the House or rooms for your special occasion. We are here to support the local community in achieving their goals. We have an Older Adults Support group that is comprised of a Chit Chat group and Gentle Exercise group. There is the Hugs All Round quilting group who make quilts that are gifted to children in need around Christchurch. Recently we have had a community member start up the Mothers and Children's group here on a Wednesday morning. Also we are in the process of establishing a community garden with the support and help of volunteers and the Just Dirt Trust. We are open between 9 am - 4 pm Monday to Friday and extend an open invitation to all to come and see us during these times.
