Waitaki Community Gardens sowing the seeds of community and sustainability

The Waitaki Community Gardens is at the heart of the small community of around 23,000 people, with a mission to share the joys of sustainable gardening with locals and touring visitors.

Supported by lottery funding from Te Puna Tahua Lottery Grants Board, the community garden hosts popular events and workshops throughout the year for those eager to learn about growing their own produce and reducing their environmental impact.

From humble beginnings over a decade ago, the garden has grown into a thriving hub of activity that attracts volunteers and students of all ages and backgrounds to work side by side, sharing knowledge and experiences and growing a sense of community alongside their lettuce and tomatoes.

Central to the garden's offerings is the ‘Seed to Table’ course - a hands-on permaculture workshop series designed to equip budding green-thumbs with essential skills for cultivating organic and productive gardens.
The garden not only brings the community together but also offers a refreshing antidote to today’s fast-paced, digital world.

With 100% of Lotto New Zealand profits being returned to funding Local Grants, every time you play a Lotto New Zealand game, you’re a Kiwi helping initiatives like the Waitaki Community Gardens foster a healthy, sustainable, and connected community.

"Sometimes we don’t eat for two or three days. My younger sister cries when she’s hungry. I feel very bad about that,” says 13-year-old Nyaduer (left). She’s struggling to fight hunger and keep her siblings alive.

Nyaduer is living without her mum or dad in a displacement camp in South Sudan. Without life’s basics. Without enough food. Right now, hunger is leaving kids too weak to run or play. Some don’t even have the energy to speak.

Please help. Will you reach out to them with life-saving food and support, just like you would if they lived next door?

Lottery funding boosts East Taranaki Environment Collective’s conservation and sustainability efforts

Two decades ago, a group of locals in East Taranaki started on a mission to protect their local native wildlife by creating a natural environment where native species could thrive free from the dangers posed by introduced pests.

Fast forward twenty years and the East Taranaki Environment Collective (ETEC) is now a leading community-conservation initiative, supported by lottery funding grants from Te Puna Tahua Lottery Grants Board to deliver one of the largest community environmental projects in Aotearoa.

The programme spans over 18,000 hectares of mustelid (animals like stoats and ferrets) control in East Taranaki and 1,000 hectares of intensive rat and possum ground control in the Pouiatoa.

By employing a network of traps and ground control methods, the programme works to create a haven for indigenous species such as kiwi, kōkako, and the New Zealand long-tailed bat to thrive.

This is just one example of the incredible causes happening in your community, with 100% of Lotto New Zealand’s profits going back to support thousands of great causes all over Aotearoa. So, every time you play any Lotto New Zealand game, it’s a win for our environment, and it’s a win for our native species.

Annual Matariki Multicultural Tree Planting
Saturday 6 July 2024, 10:30am-1:30pm

EarthDiverse, the Waikato Interfaith Council, the Hamilton City Council, the Waikato Multicultural Council, Matariki ki Waikato, the Bahá’í Community, (and many other other partners) are co-organising a Community-wide tree planting event to take place in Hamilton on Saturday 6 July 2024, 10:30am-1:30pm (This year’s event will take place Rain or Shine). Please use the Rotokauri Rd entrance, opposite Kourataki Rd instead of the entrance across from the Zoo. If you use the new entrance across from the Zoo you won’t find us as we’ll be on the other side of the Park!

Bring a spade or shovel, gumboots, appropriate outdoor weather gear (e.g. hat, rain gear, sunglasses), some gardening gloves, water and a big smile. If you don’t want to dig there are other ways to help out (like bringing a small food donation, or helping with setting out and serving a light lunch). A light lunch will be served (courtesy of EarthDiverse, Kaivolution, Go Eco, Waikato Interfaith Council, the Bahá’í Community, Ahmaddiyya Muslim Community, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Trust, and others). Any ready to eat food donations (e.g. bread, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, baked goods, UHT milk, tea bags, instant coffee, juice, etc.) will be much appreciated. Please bring your own plates, cutlery or mugs in order to minimise waste. 100 people would mean planting 5-10 saplings each.

This event is free, family-friendly and fun! Open to all. Mark this date in your diaries now. Come and help offset your carbon usage!

Organisers:

• 9:30-10:00am: set up marquees, booths, tables, food, etc.

Schedule:

• 10:15-10:30am: arrive and find parking on Rotokauri Rd.

• 10:30-11:00am: Intro, welcome and health & safety briefing at carpark

• 11:00-12:15pm: plant saplings in Waiwhakareke reserve

• 12:15-1:30pm: shared free buffet lunch; mingling and networking

NOTE: Please do not use the car park across from the Zoo entrance on Brymer Rd this year due to ongoing development work. Please park along Rotokauri Rd and Kourataki Road. Helpers will be there to guide you. Once parked, enter Waiwhakareke via the Rotokauri Road Gate. Marquees and tables for organising groups can be set up just inside the gate. We will gather here, just inside the Rotokauri Rd gate for our 10:30am orientation, then we will walk to the tree planting area. The light lunch will be served near the Rotokauri gate.
