Since Christmas, Greater Wellington Regional Council engineers have been investigating the strength of the bridge, as well as ground conditions.
Due to the nature of the investigation and the timeframes required to process permits and find appropriate times to enter the live rail corridor, it has taken several months to be able to gather this information safely.
Yesterday Greater Wellington received a report saying the bridge was safe to be reopened to the public, however additional strengthening efforts will be ongoing. It is expected the bridge can remain open through the majority of these works.
Greater Wellington thanks the pubic for their patience while the bridge was closed.
