The theft happened at the Woodend Bakery on Main North Rd in Woodend, shortly after 12am on Friday.
Security camera footage of the incident posted online by bakery staff showed a person dressed in a dark hoodie breaking into the store before fleeing with the till.
A shot captured by a camera outside the bakery shows the alleged burglar hop on what appears to be an e-scooter and flee while clutching the till in one arm.
A police spokeswoman said inquiries were ongoing.
Anyone with information should call police on 105 and quote file number 211015/3944.
