Halloween is nearly upon us and, while popular in the US, it is still growing in popularity here in NZ. Will you get involved with Halloween this year? Why or why not? And where are the best places to trick-or-treat in Whangārei?

The start and finish point will be the Mangakahia Sport Complex. The ride routes are as follow and will mean that cyclists will be using your road during the event:
- Fred Ogle Memorial Ride - 110km – commences at 9am
The ride is an out and back route from the Mangakahia Sports Complex to Hukerunui return, via Kokopu, Matarau and Jordan Valley. The roads used for the ride are: starting from the Mangakahia Sports Complex heading west along Mangakahia Rd, then turning right on to Kokopu Rd, right on Kokopu Block Rd, left on to State Hwy 14, left on to Kara Rd, left on to McKinley Rd, right on to Kokopu Rd, right on to Pipiwai Rd, left on to Matarau Rd, right on to Rushbrook Rd, left on to Jordan Valley Rd, right on to Hukerenui Rd, turning around at the end of Hukerenui Rd (at Kopeti Rd), back along same route to Kokopu Rd, all the way along Kokopu Rd to the sub-station crossing State Hwy 15 on to Whatatiri Rd and then left on to Kerehunga Rd, with the finish just before the Sports Complex
- Lynley MacDonald Ride 50 km – commences at 9.30am
This ride follows the first part of 110km route but turns at the end of Kokopu Rd.
- MyRide Whangarei 25 km and 12.5km Fun Ride – commences at 9.40am
Both these rides start from the Mangakahia Sports Complex heading west along Mangakahia Rd, then turning left on to Whatatiri Rd then left again on to Kerehunga Rd, with the finish just before the Sports Complex. The 25km riders complete this circuit twice.
The Background to the rides, is that tragically in 2008 two local riders lost their life’s when hit by vehicles while out training. Fred Ogle was an avid cyclist, fitness enthusiast, and road safety advocate who was killed by a hit-and-run driver while cycling up Maungatapere Hill. As Northland Road Safety Association Treasurer, Fred worked on initiatives such as fatigue stops that encourage drivers to take breaks and be alert. Lynley MacDonald was a local travel agent and keen cyclist, who was out training on Pipiwai Rd with her Dad, Ross, when she was stuck from behind by a cattle truck, approximately 250m from the intersection with Kokopu Rd. The Fred Ogle Memorial (110km) and Lynley MacDonald (50km) Rides routes take riders past both ghost bikes.
The rides have become a key event in the Northland cycling calendar and this year is intended to bring renewed focus on road user awareness to cycling safety. The 2019 event is being co-hosted by Bike Northland, MyRide Whangarei and Marsden Wheelers Cycling Club.
The event will be supported by volunteers along the course and traffic management provided by Kia Tupato Limited. There will be “Please Stop on Request” points at key crossing, which will be operated if required by the Kia Tupato traffic management team members.
We expect riders to be on the roads along the route between 8.30am through to 1.30pm (approx).
We apologise for any inconvenience caused, but thank you in advance for using caution around any cyclists while driving on the roads during this event and at any other time.
If you require any additional information or would like to participate in the event please email info@marsdenwheelers.co.nz enter using this google form forms.gle...

The tara iti/New Zealand fairy tern is on the brink of extinction with fewer than 40 birds alive.
So there was much celebration about the first egg of the season, laid at Waipu by birds known as Mr and Mrs Red due to the red identification bands on their legs.

Kahutara Primary School in Featherston is switching to LEDs. All LEDs are Gen Less bulbs as they use less energy, which ultimately helps halt climate change. If we all got on board and switched now it would make a huge difference

For the month of November, we want to raise awareness and work together to end all forms of violence including family harm, elder and child abuse, sexual assault, gang violence, and more. These victimisations affect us all and can have lasting effects that spill into our everyday lives including at work and school.
To do your part this month, perhaps consider supporting a women’s refuge or work with Police in your area to host an info night on how to identify elder or child abuse in your community. This month’s campaign also coincides with White Ribbon Day on 25 November which is an internationally celebrated day that aims to prevent violence towards women.
