Garry Grimmer, 63, from Amberley, lost name suppression when he appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Wednesday.
Police allege he set fire to a large pile of old tyres at a yard on Racecourse Rd, in Amberley, on January 29.
ECan intended to have the tyres moved to a chipping facility, and the tyre chips would then have been transported to a cement company.
Grimmer was remanded on bail to appear again on June 9.
