North Shore gang issues won't be solved by arrests alone, police say

Caroline Williams Reporter from North Shore Times

Kia ora neighbours. A new community policing team on the North Shore says local gang issues won’t be solved by arrests alone.

Gang issues, family violence and rangatahi (young people) were the key focus of a hui with community leaders in Beach Haven on Thursday, led by Northcote MP Shanan Halbert.

The meeting followed the shooting of a house on Mirage Place on June 4, which police are investigating alongside a spate of Auckland shootings linked to gang rivalry.

Waitematā East area prevention manager Inspector Todd Moore-Carter said everyone should be allowed to feel safe in their own home, especially children.

Waitematā Māori responsiveness manager and Pouwhirinaki (dependable person) Inspector Todd Bartlett added it was a community problem as well as a police problem.

“We’re not going to arrest our way out of this.”
